Community

The Canterbury Rams have a strong emphasis on working within the Canterbury community including South Canterbury, Mid Canterbury, the wider Christchurch area and North Canterbury. The Rams will continually assess and develop community programmes in which it believes it can make a major difference. Initially it will focus on contributing to the following programmes:

  1. Game Day Charities

The Canterbury Rams will team up with four charities who will be promoted at two game days each. Community development is close to the heart of the Rams organisation and in particular we want to support charities who focus on the east of Christchurch given the additional challenges this part of our community has faced post earthquakes. We will be promoting each charity during game week, players will visit the charity and funds will be collected for the charity at the game.

  2. The Champion Centre is this weeks game day charity which provides relationship-based early intervention services to infants and young children with complex disabilities. Parents and children visit the Centre each week and have one-on-one individualised sessions with each of the members of a multi-disciplinary team.

  3. Rams in High School Gyms
The Canterbury Rams bring elite basketball to high school gyms through the Canterbury Region through holding their practices and trainings across a range of school gyms and opening the sessions to all players participating in that schools basketball programme. This allows school players to see first-hand the intensity and commitment elite players train with and to meet and talk to their heroes.

  4. Canterbury Regional Coach and Player Development Programme
This is an initiative by Basketball New Zealand to encourage and foster basketball coaching and player development throughout the nation. The Canterbury Regional Basketball Foundation is working with the Basketball Associations to deliver this for the Canterbury Region. The Rams support this initiative through the provision of high quality and specialist coaching resources and allowing this programme to access the Rams support resources such as strength and conditioning and sports psychology.

  5. Rams Scholarship and Mentoring Programme
A number of young basketball players in the Canterbury region will be selected on an annual basis to receive a $2,500 scholarship to cover their costs to play representative basketball. The programme will be needs based and include basketball and life mentoring from Rams players.

  6. In – Schools Coaching Programme
The Canterbury Rams work closely with the Basketball Associations through the Canterbury Region to provide school coaching support (for players and teacher coaches) through regular school room visits. Local youth competitions will also be supported by Rams players attending, encouraging, coaching and refereeing the games.

  7. Promoting Basketball Participation
The Canterbury Rams participate in numerous community events to promote and encourage young people to get involved and play basketball, whether that is shooting hoops in the backyard, down at their local mini ball competition, playing for their school or representing Canterbury.
