John "Pope" Whorton

The Marley Rams made a call to the Pope, Pope Whorton that is, to see if he knew of anyone who might be in a position to come down-under to help solve the interior issues of the team. The response, "I'll come"!

After finishing his season in Germany for the Tier club Whorton was looking forward to a month of couch relaxation, occasional lawn mowing and some time with his wife and son. Only a couple of months before a team mate had discussed whether he would ever look to come down to NZ again and Pope had said he would consider it. Little did he know the Rams would be calling and the deal done.

Whorton last played in Canterbury in 2003 where he averaged 22.7ppg and 12.4 rpg over 16 games after coming in late due to European commitments. This following a league leading 2002, where he picked up the rebounding title 13.7rpg and was named Outstanding Forward.
Whorton has since spent his time in top European Leagues, Turkey, Croatia, Venezuela, Germany, France as well as a stint in Portugal.
